Imprint & About This Project
A Family Project
The idea for this website arose when I found old family photos – yellowed shots of a man at the chessboard, tournament pictures from a bygone era, postcards with signatures of legendary masters. In conversations with my father, Dr. Ulrich R.M.E. Geppert, a great-nephew of Jacques Mieses, these pictures came to life: stories about the great-great-uncle who played with Lasker and Capablanca, who fled from the Nazis to England and still won brilliancy prizes at over 80 years old.
This site is an attempt to preserve the memory of Jacques Mieses – not only as a chess player, but as a human being, as part of our family history, and as a witness to a turbulent epoch of European history.

The Family Connection
Jacques Mieses (1865–1954) was the brother of Marie Mieses, the great-great-grandmother of Johannes Geppert. Dr. Ulrich Geppert is thus a great-nephew, Johannes Geppert a great-great-nephew of the chess master. The original materials on this site – photographs, postcards, documents – come from the family estate and have been preserved for generations.
