Historical Context
In September 1947, Jacques Mieses was 82 years old and had been living in London since his flight from Nazi Germany in 1938. Despite his advanced age, he was still active: just one year earlier he had won a brilliancy prize at the Hastings 1946 tournament. The article honors the "world's oldest chess master."
