Final Resting Place
On February 23, 1954, Jacques Mieses died at the age of 88 in London. He found his final resting place at Hoop Lane Cemetery in North London – far from his birthplace Leipzig, but in the city that had given him a new home after his flight from Nazi Germany in 1938.
The Final Years
After his emigration to England in 1938 with only 15 Reichsmarks in his pocket, Mieses continued playing undaunted. In 1946 he won the brilliancy prize at Hastings at age 80, in 1948 he finished third in Stockholm at age 83.
In 1950 he became one of the 27 original FIDE Grandmasters – technically speaking the first British Grandmaster in history.
Hoop Lane Cemetery
The Jewish cemetery in the London district of Golders Green was opened in 1897. Here many Jewish emigrants from Germany and Eastern Europe found their final resting place.
