Carl Schlechter (1874–1918)
Known as the "Drawing Master" for his solid, defensive style, Schlechter was one of the strongest players of his era. In 1910, he came within a whisker of becoming World Champion, drawing his match with Emanuel Lasker 5-5 but losing the title on the tie-break rules of the time.
